A comprehensive guide on lighting

A comprehensive guide on lighting for all shooting enthusiasts who take their training and health seriously.

SCATT can’t guarantee sustainable work of our trainers if the lighting conditions are sub-par. This mainly refers to flicker-intensive lighting solutions.

We at SCATT highly recommend using only flicker-free LED lamps with "warm" spectrum (2700K), incandescent lights or any standard halogen lamp to ensure that not only your SCATT sensor can easily detect the target but also so that your eyesight is safe during every training session. Only with proper attention to details of his/her setup a shooter, be it an amateur or a professional one, can be sure that his career as well as health are not in jeopardy!

Flicker is constant fluctuation of light output and it is of two types – Visible and Invisible. Any flicker above 100 Hz is termed as invisible flicker which human eye cannot detect, and it is the one that we all should be concerned about.

Here’s how to check invisible flicker: → Open your smartphone camera in slow motion video mode.

  • Point towards the LED light source.
  • You will notice a visible distortion. This is the invisible flicker.

Or a video alternative.

If you happen to detect significant flicker at your local range or at home be aware of health implications! LED lights with high flicker rate (mainly previous generation LEDs with low-quality drivers) can cause serious damage! Because of the flicker, human eye is forced to rapidly adjust to changing light output, which stresses the eye muscles. Studies has revealed that prolonged exposure to flicker emitted by cheap LED lights can lead to various health problems including eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, fatigue, apparent slowing or stopping of motion, reduced visual task performance and in some cases, neurological problems.
